This book discusses Basic Chemistry. It includes discussions about materials and measurements, atoms, molecules and ions, acids and bases, electrochemistry and chemical waste processing
Chemistry is the science that studies matter, its properties, the changes it undergoes, and the energy that accompanies these changes. Therefore, an understanding of matter is the primary foundation for studying all chemical concepts. Nearly every phenomenon occurring around humans involves matter, from respiration and digestion to medicine production to the various industrial processes that produce products for everyday needs.
Matter is generally defined as anything that has mass and occupies space (Brown et al., 2024). Mass indicates the amount of substance contained in an object, while space refers to the volume occupied by the object. Based on this definition, objects such as water, air, metal, wood, plastic, and the human body fall into the category of matter because they have measurable mass and volume. Conversely, light, heat, and sound are not considered matter because they have neither mass nor volume, although their presence can be perceived.
